Dan Maguire is a composer, performer, audiovisual artist, and educator based in Philadelphia. Growing up in a military family – across three time zones and three thousand miles – has immersed him in a variety of geographical and social landscapes. This unsettled life, shaped by change and movement, has inspired a similarly varied creative output, ranging from opera to video game scores and everything in between.
His music has been performed by groups and ensembles throughout the United States, including the Washington Master Chorale, Beo String Quartet, loadbang, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble. His weather-based audiovisual installation, Atmoambience Station, was awarded a Vice Provost for the Arts Grant from Temple University. Most recently, Dan was awarded a Presser Foundation Graduate Music Award to help fund the production of his debut opera.
In addition to his compositional activity, he works as an educator in several capacities. In the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s Tune Up Philly program, Dan coaches the Pizzicato Players, an ensemble of young musicians playing plucked string instruments. At Temple University, he is currently working as a Teaching Assistant while completing his PhD Dissertation. He is also the Coordinator of the OAcademy Music Conservatory’s Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio, a primarily virtual program which serves students of any age, from around the world and all walks of life.
Dan holds an M.M. in Composition from the Mannes College of Music and is currently pursuing a PhD at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.
